First Week

Well sense everyone is blogging about the first week of college I guess I will too. The first week of college was nothing like I expected. In high school they would tell us that the teachers really didn’t care if you payed attention or not they just would teach basically and leave. Welp that was wrong! I realized the teachers actually do care, we can’t use our laptops unless needed, and we can’t even use our phones. The laptop rule is whatever but the phone rule just sucks, like seriously. In high school we were always allowed to be on our phones and the teachers really never cared as long as you would actually do your work and still continue to have a good grade in their class. I guess teachers here just think it’s a “distraction “. Majority of everyone can multitask so I’m not seeing the big deal of being on our cell phones. I’m the kind of person that at least needs to listen to music while in class just because the simple fact that I get really bored easily and sooner or later I will fall asleep. Besides the electronic rules college is pretty chill. I thought it would be hard being so far away from home but it’s not as bad as I thought. I do really miss my family and them cooking Puerto Rican food, I’m basically living off of burgers and fries everyday now. Although NMU has a Hispanic food place it’s just not the real deal and it was basically a slap in the face when I found out they only have flower tortillas. It’s not like I can cook my tortillas because we aren’t even allowed to have a George Foreman grill so not being able have corn tortillas or actually eat real Hispanic food is just horrible. I honestly just can’t wait till November so I can finally have a real meal.

  1. the cell phone rule isn't just seen as a distraction but its mostly seen as a sign of disrespect. you're there to listen and give your undivided attention to the instructor. I understand this rule because i freaking hate it when im speaking to someone and they're chilling on their phone. Its just rude to say the least. Try looking at it as if you were taking your time out of your day to teach. You'd hate it to if you had to teach to expressionless faces or no faces at all because they're focused on something else. Its a respect thing. Plain and simple.

  2. I agree that it's nothing like what they tell you in high school! Which is good, and college in general isn't as intimidating as I thought. I'm from here, so I'm not missing out on meals.. that really sucks, but at least it's something you can look forward to!! :)

  3. In my opinion cell phones are fine . we are adults and shouldn't be told when we can and cannot use the devices we pay for . i mean yeah it can distract us but we are solely the ones paying for the education so i just believe we should have a choice rather than be controlled . i mean the policy is legit for highschool but c'mon college too ?
