Today
there is a lake in particular that has been overly polluted since 1999, which
is the Onondaga Lake located in Central New York. The lake is “the result of decades of dumping
by Allied Chemical, which merged with Honeywell International” (Susanne Craig).
Honeywell has spent millions of dollars trying to dredging the lake, which is
roughly 4.6 miles. The dredging was an attempt to remove the mercury and other
pollutions. The pollution in the lake has caused attention from the state’s
Health Department, who continues to warn people about eating fish from the
lake. “ While some fish may be eaten occasionally by men over 15 and women over
50, states suggest that some, like carp and walleye, should not be eaten”(
Susanne Craig). Although the lake has a
long way from being clean the Environmental Conservation Department has been
doing a great job of cleaning it, causing the lake to be the cleanest it has
been in over a century, and they have even taken an even bigger step by
cleaning the sewage as well.
